Health Clinic

Hours of Operation

The goal of the clinic at Baxter Community Center is to provide high-quality primary health care at a low cost for families who lack insurance or receive Medicaid or Medicare. The pediatric clinic is walk-in, all others are by appointment.

Clinic staffers teach families about the need for regular, preventative care and proper nutrition. Through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, pregnant and post-partum women and children up to age five are given regular physicals. Mothers and children also receive necessary immunizations, meet with a registered dietician, and are provided coupons for nutritious foods.

Other programs permit parents to bring older children to Baxter for regular care at a low cost.  Children who show signs of ADD or ADHD are assessed and diagnosed so they may receive proper treatment. Baxter’s clinic conducts health screening for adults at risk for diabetes or high blood pressure. Clients are taught about appropriate preventive measures.

The counseling program staff works with both families and individuals. In 2001, 1,300 people received health services from the Baxter clinic; 165 individuals received care in the counseling program. Of the 1,300 people served in the clinic, 350 of them had incomes of $5,000 a year or less.

Several of this area’s finest medical practitioners volunteer their services on a regular basis, so patients have the benefit of excellent quality care from a physician they may see consistently. The clinic and counseling programs work in collaboration with local hospitals and doctor’s offices, the Kent County Health Department, Project Rehab, Pathfinder Resources, and the Kent County Family Independence Agency.
